When I looked to see where other were mounting their CBs, I wondered why there weren't more dash mounts. Since I bought a Cobra 29 LTD classic I had limited options, but I really wanted it on the dash.

My only goals were to keep from having to screw it directly into the dash and have it strong enough to stay in place while driving offroad.

After poking around I found there is a screw that sits in the cubby hole on top of the dash, so I decided this would be a perfect place to mount my CB.

I started out thinking too small and ended up cutting the case of an old HP computer and making a piece that would fit. But after getting it in I figured I'd have to make three and screw them together to make it strong enough.


Then I found some metal to use, a brace off a swing set that had rotted and then was put in the burn pile. It was rusty, but it fit my needs.


I cut the brace and bent it using a vice and hammer, and drilled a hole for the mounting screw. I had planned on using a second screw to keep it from rotating, but with the way I cut the piece it could only turn toward the driver side if it did manage to turn.


I got it mounted to get a dry fitting so I could mark for drilling the hole for the thumb screw.

After drilling the hole I mounted again to see how much I needed to trim off.


Trimmed it and rounded the corners and re-installed.


I added a rubber mesh used for kitchen shelves to prevent any sliding and some rubber foam to soak up some of the vibrations when drive offroad.


Painted it flat black.



Now I have to wait for my antenna, cable, and mount. I may have to modify it once the cables are run, but I drove around and went offroad with it mounted and the CB was fine.

Looks good! Nice Job! Are you going to run the ant cable down into the dash? Id like to see a wider picture that captures the whole front dash with the CB in there.

 

I finally got my antenna cable in, so I ran it partially. Still waiting to find time to get the antenna bracket installed and also waiting on the antenna.

The coax stuck out farther than I expected so I had to modify the bracket some to fit. Now I need to paint it again.

On my 2013 JK, there is a rubber channel that runs behind the dash and that is where I ran my wires to the passenger side.

Here are some pics with the wires in place. I need to repaint the bracket after grinding on it some more.



If anybody else tries to make their own bracket, make sure you fit it with the cables in place.
