That Scorpion is a monster! Makes the ATAS120 look like a little baby. Probably why the Scorpion crushes the ATAS.

Here's the ATAS on the Breedlove mount.

Goldtr8,
I like that mount, how is the ground plane for that antenna? Also did you make that mount yourself if not where did you purchase it?

Rfrogman, I also like your rig set up, where did you purchas your mount? does it give the antenna a good ground plane and will it work for a Standard spare tire carrier as I am not planning on upgrading it for now?

The reason for questions concerning ground plane is that I am thoroughly confused about this subject and do not know exactly how give mobile antenna good ground plane on my TJ?

My mount is a high-breed. I fabbed the aluminum plate to attach the standard US/NATO mount to my tire carrier. You should be able to fab something similar to attach to a standard tire carrier. It does provide a good ground plain just like it does on the back of a HUMVEE.

Just do whatever it takes, (by using ground straps) to make sure all the metal in your rig is grounded to each other. Meaning.....doors, tailgate, exhaust, and mostly, frame. Check for continuity from your antenna ground to all of these and then you'll have a good ground plane. Think of all the steel/metal on a vehicle as RF ground being the other half of your antenna.

I made it myself to tie into the hinges so I don't stress the sheet metal.

think about a mobile as a dipole one side is the vehicle and the ither is the whip. Because of loading coils and tuners the whip side is a quarete wave but the vwhicle side is not. The more you bond the more you make the other leg of the dipole match and you improve efficiency ans signal to noise ratio.

I saw some other screwdrivers installed at a hamfest thisweekend and I am glad I got the scorpion. Won't say any names but they are toys.

keep us posted

I don't type so well on my phone

I have never seen and ATAS in person so they were not part of the toys I referenced.

I am sure the guys who owned the toys were happy and it worked for them.

I go full boat when I do things so I needed a small mortar launcher.
