There is just no adventure any more.
In some states running a radar detector will get you a ticket.
Never had them when I was a kid and I don't really need it now.
BTW if you are in the Twin Cities tune to KQRS 92.5, if they are talking a urin stained matress
there is a gun in the area.

I have an old Whistler 280. It has saved me at least a dozen tickets over the last 10 years. More importantly it saved me from my 4th drivers license suspension (52 points and counting).
Switching from high horsepower vehicles to slow clunky 4x4's has helped more than any radar detector. It just takes so long to get up to speed - it's just not worth it anymore.
So I get my kicks in the mud, rocks, and sand on the 'OTHER' side of the white line...
It's just a lot cheaper that way
PigInAJeep - I admire what you have chosen as your profession, it is indeed honorable. Which is why I've never attempted to outrun a cruiser (not that I could really). You gotta have some respect for these folks.
I just wish the speed limit was really the speed limit...ya know - 'Selective Enforcement' ?
55 = 68
65 = 74
How are we (John Q Public) supposed to know the real speed limit, when it varies from badge to badge?

Hi Folks! I'm one of those SOBs that drive his JEEP 45 - 50 MPH. I drive her on secondary and tertiary roads because I enjoy it. If I need to be at a certain place at a certain time...I just leave a bit earlier and still get where I'm going. When necessary on a 65 MPH road, I'll drive her around 60 but exit to a secondary road ASAP. My wife has a Chevy Trail Blazer...that one is a little different story but seldom exceed the posted limits. I lived through my "fast days" with a "68 Charger w/ a 383 Magnum. I've seen 145 MPH several times and don't care to try and re-live that again! Drive carefully and you won't have a need for a radar detector... Take care. Mike
I'm rarely over 70mph on the highway, and I stick to the limit on secondary roads nowadays. The V1/CB combo I have in the jeep is more for gadget than for go. I got the V1 several years ago when I had a GTI and was on the hwy daily. After you use one for a given time, you just don't feel right without it. The best part of having one in the jeep is knowing there is radar running ahead just as some jackass decides to slingshot by. The CB lets me know they're out there, the V1 lets me know they're looking. Now all I need is a scanner so I can listen to the jackass get his ticket. Sweet.
I've always driven trucks. My explorer was slow... My Silverado was fast, and the JK is slow again.
I feel like the JK is the reason for speed limits. It's a rather clunky vehicle that travels really well at the speed limit. Now, I do have a tendency to run a little fast on the highway (75 in a 65, 65 in a 60), if the conditions are clear.
Anything more than the speed limit, and the Jeep gets really unsettled, and isn't really much fun to drive. I don't know how it applies to where you are, but around here roads are twisty, and a 55mph zone is a 55mph zone in a jeep. If you're in a sports car, then it's a different story.
The moral of the story: I don't see how a radar detector could be useful in one. Plus, the windsheild is slim enough! Why add more clutter/danger?
My opinion is that radar detectors can be very useful. I own a passport 8500, and I have to say that the only time I ever got a speeding ticket is when I didn't have it turned on. No detector is a magical device that is 100% bulletproof, however there are some very good ones out there (like the V1, and others). Learning to decipher what your detector is actually telling you is the key. There's alot of info on the web about police radar/lidar, how it works, and what to look for. Sites like www.radartest.com for instance (you can learn alot without buying any "reports").
That said, I typically dont use my passport in the jeep, I just dont speed that much. However in the Vette, well the fact that I still have a valid license is testament enough.

Although I very rarely speed in the JK, it's habit to take the V1 with me. I have it hardwired as well. Coupling with the CB is good but have found the truckers don't talk as much as they used to.
good point.
