It will take a strong signal to, what they call "break the squelch" in order for you to hear them. All others will be "squelched" out.

And if you have a lot of vehicle noise, which the JK is known for, then you have to turn the squelch up even higher to get rid of that noise. So essentially you are squelching out any signals that are not strong enough to break that threshold you have set to get rid of not only normal air noise, but the noise emanating from the jeep as well.
aaaaa ok see i didnt know any of that^ before so i guess i have to hear the squelch to listen to ppl who are far away. is there anything i can do to lower some of the jeep noise?

Yes, but it's very time consuming. It mostly involves a lot of bonding with ground straps all over the jeep. As well as possibly the use of, what they call ferriteson some lines to get rid of noise that your antenna is picking up. It may not be worth it if all you really need the CB for is trail use. But if you do want to attemp it you can go here: http://www.k0bg.com/ and read up about all kinds of things.

I'm new to jk-forum and to my 2012 jk. I bought some extras for it, just haven't put anything on yet. I was thinking about going with my dad to the jeep jamboree and was told i need the cb radio for the trail ride. I purchased the same cb you have here and was just wondering if you had a picture you could post of how you mounted it.
