Have you tried swapping in a different cable? Sounds like you could have a bad cable.. Either that, or the center conductor is grounding out into the chassis. I know you said you grinded some paint off... What was the motivation for that?

Exactly what I was going to say. Especially the latter half.

Has it ever worked, or is this a new install? Make sure you have the antenna/post/cable/washers/poly rings assembled in the correct order.

Default bad cable

Could be a bad cable. I had a cable with a fire ring end. appears the weather got down in the fire ring and the ground wire for the cable.

when i installed mine i used a voltmeter to verify the ground - suggest doing that. Even if you've ground the paint off of the TF bracket (which I needed to do also - around the firering and around the mounting bolts) you also need to make sure that the bolts your using on the tire carrier are getting you a good ground.

Default Follow the yellow brick road

Follow the steps on this link in order until you find the problem. Just don't try to transmit with high SWR because you will blow out the amp in a Cobra 75.

my SWR is down below 1 (channel 19).

i used the CoolTech JK Gatemount w/ my Cobra 75 & the adjustable tip firestik (4ft) antenna.

I used the "subwoofer" (or d-ring bolt) as my ground and i sanded away the paint on the bolt & under it at the body contact points.

I also used a VoltOhm meter to verify continuity.

Ive read that any ground via the tailgate is risky...you need to ground to the body &/or frame

I also discovered that i had to set the antenna, re-place the tip/cover and then check the SWR.
