Default Walkie-Talkie Style CB Radios: Don't Bother

So I bought a brand new handheld, walkie-talkie style of CB radio figuring I didn't have time or skills to put in a full-blown unit and run antenna etc. $85, I'm good to go.

[Buzzer sound] Wrong! On our last run of about 12 Jeeps, I was probably 10th in line, and couldn't hear anything from the first 1-3 Jeeps if there was any kind of obstacle (hills etc.) between us. I'm only talking a couple hundred yards at very most.

Guys behind me with modest units and Firestix, I could hear them responding to the front, but I never got anything. Disappointing. Plus, the speaker is barely audible even when turned up full.

This was a Cobra something or other. I don't know. Piece of crap.

Well hey man, thanks for the tip! Will definitely try that as I would need an antenna anyway. I did notice that FRS works better, and their antenna is like an inch or two.

Or get yourself a fixed mount CB to put in the Jeep, and keep the handheld to loan to people that don't have CB's on trail runs or to use when spotting someone.

My midland does both and works very well. hooks to a full size antenna on the back of the jeep for on the trail or I slap on a battery pack and stubby antenna and jump out and act as a spotter.

You can certainly stay with your handheld and just use an external antenna. You can source a BNC to PL259 adapter so that your external CB antenna can attach directly to your antenna (BNC) plug. I would do that first and see if you are happy with the perfromance of the radio. It will definitely be dramatically improved - I guarantee it.
Good advice. All I use for runs where a CB is required is a Midland 75-822 handheld connected to a 3' Firestick mounted up high on my tire carrier/cargo carrier using 12v power from the JK. With CB's being limited to only 4 watts by law and the relatively long 11 meter wave length, a high-gain external antenna is mandatory. My range with a simple handheld and external antenna is as good as any other CB on the run.

Hey Jim - check with Eric (gryphon) cuz he has 1 or 2 firestix's he's trying to get rid of. I think he might even give it to you since you're our long lost SD brother!

Hey Donnie, thanks. Let me check with this other guy first, he's about 50 miles closer. If he's already rid of his, I'll hit you up!
