What does the RF knob do? It is actually a ring knob around the squelch.

 

It should increase or decrease your receive. If you are real close to another rig, you can turn down the rf so his signal won't overload the front end of the radio. Normally you would want it all the way up so you can hear the best, except for instances like this.
