Default Why CB???

Why do all the Jeep and 4x4 clubs seem to require CBs??? Many motorcycle groups have switched over to FRS and GMRS radios quite some time ago.

Maybe I am stupid, but I don't even know what a FRS and GMRS radio is.

We all already have CBs, they work well and are cheap. What is the advantage of having everyone change? Is there soemthing wrong with them?

CBs don't run out of batteries.

CBs don't get lost

CBs don't require a license (not that makes any real difference)

CBs have longer antennas

CBs have squelch, thus the ability to unsquelch and listen to distant signals, most of the little handhelds filter out distant signals.

CBs transmit at a full 4W (and even more with "tuning") with larger, exterior antennas, yielding longer effective ranges.

CBs don't get forgotten (they're stuck along with the ride)

Last but not least, Jeeps just look cooler with them . . . you'll soon agree.

And lets face it , they're kinda cool to use.

GMRS radios are available in vehicle mount just like CBs

FRS doesn't require a license but they have a very limited range.

Longest effect range of any radio is with an antenna that is the length of a 1/4 wave length of the radio frequency, for CBs that is about 12 ft, for GMRS that is less than 1 ft, they don't need longer antenna.

it's because we all wanna be like Smokey and the Bandit
i enjoy finding out where the cops are and what's going on up the road, truckers and other CB users can be very helpful on the road. they can tell you where the traffic jams are and how to get back on the right heading if you find some cool people. and don't forget, Daisy Duke had a CB in her Jeep, some of us just can't fit in the shorts so we buy the CB since we have the jeep already

Just buy the CB and join the club, they really are sweet. I mounted mine under my drivers seat and it's out of the way and still useable.

Sorry but this is not true. Where you made your mistake is by saying "the longest effective range...." Although a 1/4 WL (wavelength) antenna can, and is, an "effective" antenna, you can use 1/2, 5/8, Full wave, or even multable full wavelength, etc... antennas on any given frequency, which means even on a CB frequency.
The longer, ie, bigger the antenna on any given freq. is like adding an amplifier to your signal, thus better effective range......(as well as other things.)

EEEEE!!! OK, I'm sorry, I should have said the longest effective range with a reasonably sized antenna . . .

Excuse my imprecise language, but it has been over 30 years since I passed my FCC radio telephony license. Not something modern geeks talk much about anymore.

Not to nitpick, but 1/4 wavelength is about 9 feet (CB is at 27-Mhz/11-meters).
