Default Windshield light mounts used as antenna mounts anyone?

Hey all,

OK, I want to get my antennas higher than my current setup and keep them close to the hood. I was thinking of using windshield light mounts to mount antennas on. Anyone try it? Pros? Cons?

Thanks.

I like this idea. I'm also interested in the opinion of an experienced radio expert.

What bands are you interested in? Are you talking HamSticks or just whips or ????

Cheers

VHF/UHF 50W max. CB 4W max.

2/440 is Larsen 2/440 5/8 whip, CB is RS 3' cheapie.

2/440 would be on the passenger side, CB on drivers.

I have thought about doing it... it sounds like a good idea to me.

I know someone who mounted a cb antenna to his side mirror that was relocated to that part of the hood (so he would have mirrors with his doors off). He went ahead and ran a ground wire to the engine bay thought I wouldn't have been too surprised if things were grounded good being mounted there. He was using a 2ft firestik but was still getting better sq and range than most other set ups I have seen.

I installed Mountain Off-Road Enterprises windshield light mount on the driver's side and mounted UHF/VHF dual band Comet antenna. I like the setup and the SWR is under 1.5:1 across the VHF band. Only down side was that the mount wasn't level. So, I shaved down two thick washers at an angle, placing one between the coax mount (SO-239) and the windshield light bracket and the other between the windshield light bracket and the antenna. I rotated the washers until the antenna was vertical (straight up and down from the front and side). Hope this helps.

I put a VHF antenna on the passenger side of a buddies jeep. The only problem he has is with the antennas hitting each other. Other than that, it works fine for him. I personally have a 1/4 wave mounted to the spare tire carrier and it works fine.

I agree with the post that says the antenna will hit the stereo antenna. Defiantly keep the HAM antenna away from the passenger side. If mounting them there is your only option you should be ok but and I stress the closer your antenna is to vertical metal the more problems you will have I would really recommend putting the HAM on the driver side cowl a good foot or more away from the A Pillar with the CB on the passenger side.
