Default Auxilary Driving light question

I need to get two driving lamps for my 07 rubi. I spend time driving to and from Alaska and need to see beyond the stock high beams. I was thinking PIAA and was wondering if I could somehow have the lights wired so when I activate the high beams, the driving lights would come on as well. Is this possible?

Yes, it is possible.

Did you get the PIAA wiring harness as well? If you did all you have to do is get rid of the switch. Instead of having a switch you would tap the high beams and have them trigger the relay turning the lights on.

Do a search for "high beam trigger" and you will find a few diagrams of how to wire it.

if a headlamp has hi beams and low beams in one housing - like the jk - it has twopositive leads going into the light housing. igure out which is the high beams and run your auxillary light positive off of that lead. your aux light will be grounded to the frame wherever you attach it
Are you saying that anythime you have your high beams on you windshield mounted lights com on also, or do you have a seperate switch so that you can turn the aux lights off.
Here in Pa it would not be a good idea to have any aux lights above the headlight wired in directly. They must be covered anyway, when onroad.

I think that I've heard that the Lightforce lights are very popular up there, you may want to check into them, I'm getting two pairs of the 170's. Wiring them into the H beam is easy but I never liked it that way , I would rather have more control. I have found that there are some situations like a light fog or mist where the lows aren't enough but the highs w/ the aux lights are to much but because there wired together you're screwed cuz' the h beams alone would be just right.

I just installed some PIAA 520 ATP lights and the instructions/diagram that come with the lights direct you to tap into the high beam power so that they come on with the high beams only, if that's they way you want to do it. You'd still want the switch so you can deactivate them if you ever want to just use the standard high beams.

I went the other direction and powered mine separately so that I can activate them whenever I want.

Thumper can you elaborate on how you were able to do that? I am trying to do the same thing and can't figure it out

Sure, it's quite simple. I'm assuming you are wiring up PIAA's that I see in your signature and that they use the same or similar wiring harness and relay as my 520's. For the switch wire that the diagram wants you to splice or tap into the high beam wire, simply run it to the fuse box (I drilled a small hole in the side and sealed it later with latex sealant) to either the M8 or M9 unused fuse locations. Those are both 20 amp fuse locations for heated seats. They are only powered during ignition. You can use a fuse-tap which is just a fuse-looking-thingy with a wire splice at the other end. I couldn't find a 20 amp fuse-tap at any of the local stores (only 10 amp) so I simply wrapped the end of the wire around a "tooth" of a 20 amp fuse and stuck it into the slot (it works just fine and I can always change it later).

I used the supplied PIAA switch. Since I didn't want to cut and resplice the tiny wires inside the switch wiring, I had to pull that big thing through the firewall which was a big pain (most time consuming thing of the whole project). I would probably cut the wire if I had to do it again. Let me know if you have any questions, I can probably snap some pics if you need them.
