Default Generic In-Dash Navigation Fitment Question

So I am installing a in-dash navigation HU this weekend and have already done the basics tonight, i.e. remove the center panel, factory radio, etc. I have also already assembled the harness and test fitted and powered up the HU. I want to make more room for it in the dash for all of the wiring behind the unit..

Is it possible to cut out all of the material above and to the rear of the radio (towards the front of the vehicle) without creating any issues? I would leave the holes that the top panel clicks into alone. The only purpose I see that it serves is to attached the plastic christmas tree that routes the digital compass wire, I could relocate this.

Thanks in advance.

Also, do you need the cage that comes with the HU to install it or are the brackets and 4 bolts in front enough to hold everything up?

I know we have PM'd but I thought I'd repond for anyone else who is thinking about a similar install.
I crammed all of my wiring in between the heater piping and the radio shelf, and to left as you look in the opening (kind-of behind the gauges)
You won't need the cage, but you will need an adapter to bolt the HU in. The factory HU is about an inch wider and the adapter will take up the space and provide a way to secure the unit.

Check out my writeup here. https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-write-ups-39/removable-face-jvc-double-din-monitor-73003/

Yep, I've got the adapter, just wasn't sure if I have to use that cage. I also wonder if it's a big deal to notch out all of that plastic above the radio to make the install easier. Has anyone else done this? There will be a lot of wires back there

Install complete, love the radio and the setup, next I will be adding a reverse camera and the bluetooth mic. It looks great and I'm glad I notched out the top of the dash for it, made it easy to fit all of the wires.

On a side note, anyone know where to tap into the reverse sensor to activate the camera?
