Hardwiring my V1 radar detector. Where can I tap into a 12v wire?

Dronac: I would recommend you buy a cheap Micronta multitester (ohm meter) from Radio Shack if you don't have one. I use it every time I wire something and that is daily! You can find a wire to tap in that is always hot, switched or even the dome light wires (for footwell lighting).

Having said that you have two cigarette lighter sockets on the center column of the dash. One is always hot, the other is switched (only on with the ignition). I can't remember which is which but it should be easy to figure out. The center column is easy to open up so you can tap into the correct wire but remember to fuse it. Good luck.

Some of us have more than just a JK and when taking road trips it's easy to not realize it and end up going 85 or so, even in the JK, especially with the music cranked up so you can't hear the minivan engine.

Also, it has saved me from more than a few tickets in my 1-ton and Mustang on the highway. A V1 works a bit better than the cheapo walmart detectors, but it is far from perfect.

BTW, way to add nothing of value at all to the thread, trying to get post count up??

I'd second both of these thoughts. A lot of the wiring in the JK in CANbus and multiplexed. So to be on the safe side the two cigarette lighter plugs are you best bet. I really wish Chrysler hadn't gone with the approach in the Jeep.

It makes lot of sense in luxury vehicles with power everything and lots of electronics, but the Wrangler is pretty low tech. I'd prefer low tech and proven.

My guess is that it gives them experience producing a relatively low tech vehicle with Canbus and it saves them money on on the wiring. But I've got to wonder how much the additional computing power cost them to run the Canbus...

It certainly makes installing and alarm a pain in the neck. For example If you want to use the factory door sensors to trigger an alarm you need to wire the trigger to each door and the gate. (Plus use a bunch of diodes so they don't cross feed each other.) Or you do what I did and tap the dome light. However, if you turn the dome light off at the light switch on the stalk you disable this trigger.

Same thing with triggering the parking lights for the alarm. You have to tap a wire under the fuse box which acts like a trigger wire from one of the CANbus controllers. If you look at your fuse diagram you will note that there are two circuits that do the parking lights. A left and a right side. If you are going to go CANbus this makes sense. A blown fuse or failure won't disable all of your lighting - just 50% of it. Better than nothing.

But I bought the JK because I wanted something simple to work on and maintain. Not something that requires diodes and capacitors to run a trigger to the switch for my driving lights...

Regards, Tim
