those speakers are 3 ohm's

I was pretty sure stock was either 2 or 4 ohms.

for what its worth:

Thanks for pointing that out - it's actually 2.7 ohms. I must have overlooked that. I believe that the stock head unit is 4 ohms - someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just spoke with Polk, and they strongly recommended running the MM's with an amp - they actually recommended the Alpine PDX (which is a marine amp).

Looks like I might be installing a head unit and amp this weekend as well

ok I am totally subbing this thread hahah keep us posted !!

I have been like insanely going over all of this kinda stuff for the past month and I am going to end up pulling the trigger soon... I found a set of the DB's both sets together for 155$ shipped so I figured thats prob my best bet at this point... Bang for buck and all... I was going to power these off a Alpine, a MRP-F300 4 CHANNEL that will only throw out 50w RMS which I was even worried about that not being enough guts for the 6501's up front (I hear they are POWER HUNGRY)

At the moment I am designing a custom box (or starting to anyway) to house some old amp subs that I got... Alpine 1507 guna run 900 watt RMS at 4 ohms to 3 JL 12w6's (v.1 not v.2)

I might switch out to a higher powered amp for the interiors... it sucks because the
DB components are
RMS Power Range (Watts) 10-100
Peak Power Handling (Watts) 300
Impedance (Ohms) 4

and the 2 ways are
RMS Power Range (Watts) 6-55
Peak Power Handling (Watts) 165
Impedance (Ohms) 4

now I am pulling this right from Crutchfield (which I consider a pretty damn good source for audio education)
How powerful an amp do I need?

Choose an amplifier whose power output is rated at least 75% to 150% of the power handling of the speakers you'll be amplifying. Make sure you're comparing the RMS power ratings of both the amp and speakers. And remember — it's better to overpower your speakers a little than to send them too little power.

I am thinking I need to step it up to a 75 watt RMS amp over 4 channels at 4 ohms...

I will be trying to find something that will work for this...

KEEP us posted!!! and PHOTOS the whole way through!!!

You should run an amp on those speakers, but for now your head unit will be fine running at 2.7. You will not regret replacing the head unit and amp.

I really like the Polk DB6501, they have a very flat response curve and sound great with rock, but at a rated 100w rms and 300 peak are exaggeration numbers. 50w rms amp will be plenty for them to handle. The gain on your amp will be so low all the extra money you spent on that amp will be wasted.

Been running db's for some time now, they sound awesome. The only issue is top down at 70 they begin to bottom out cranked. Still a hard pair to beat at 100 bucks.

Yeah. I looked around at amps in stock at various stores and the inventory is pretty weak. The best I found was a Polk 4 channel at best buy. I might just install the speakers this weekend and order the amp I want online. I know amping the speakers will make a big difference.

I'll be sure to post pictures of the installs.

I ended up on some trails yesterday and have been working all day, so the speaker install is going to have to wait until next weekend.

I guess that gives me time to get the amp and do it all at once though.

Will keep you posted.

dudeee you gotta keep us posted...

I am all over the place at this point with what to do... DB's or MM's ??? ughhh I was going to go with a 50rms amp for the DB's and then flopped to a 100rms for the MM's now I am wondering what to dooo... I feel like if I went with the MM's with a 100rms amp it would be like a bit overboard... which I am ok with... but the price is also brutal... compared to finding DB's for 6501 and 651 for $155 shipped as a package...

I know what you're saying... The DB's are an attractive price point.

I know a couple people here have the MM's, maybe they can say if it's worth the extra money.

I'm going for the MM's though - hoping to have my amp picked out by today.

Was looking at the Polk PA 500.4, but that thing's a monster. Not sure where I would install it.

I went with the db’s and love them. I also used the Rockford 300x4 amp and installed it under the steering wheel. It was very small i just made a plate for it to bolt to. Click image for larger version

ID:	265308 This set up is plenty loud for anyone who wants to damage their ears. The sound quality blows away my wife’s Bose in her GMC Acadia. Add a sub and now you’re just showing off.

So you went with the DB's and put in this amp?
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001P85IV2/...SIN=B001P85IV2

looks like you used Line inputs, (you using the stock HU?) Also did you do the 6501's up front and the 651's in the sound bar or a different set up for the DB's. did you have an infinity set up prior or no?

Right now I am looking DB's with around 50-75 wRMS amp setup or MM's with 100wRMS amp setup
