Default Keys

Hi,
i have a 07 wrangler and am down to one key, i've heard if you tape that key under the dash you can use a standard key. is this true ? and if so where do i tape it, i had 2 regular keys made up and they will start it for a few seconds.;
i was hoping theres a way to bypass the transponder, thanks in advance for any info

Dont bypass the transponder. If your Jeep ever got stolen, and the insurance company found the key, id bet they would deny your claim. Just buy another key.

Programming a new key, when you have only one, takes a "Starscam" tool. If you have two working keys, you can program a new one yourself. Some locksmiths have the Starscan tool. That would be a lot cheaper than going to the dealer.
I got this done by a locksmith for $40 total. It was a non-remote key to have for emergencies.

Maybe it's a trail rig? Maybe it's paid off and he carries liability only. There are plenty of reasons why someone may want to disable/defeat the smart-key feature and I'm interested in hearing how to do it myself. No need to give him the eyeroll.

When I got my JK I had to have another key made.The dealer charged me $60 for everything,cutting and programming.I used to go to my local hardware store and get extra keys for $1.00.

You can do it with a small gauge wire wrapped around the rubber part of the key and the other end wrapped around the key cylinder. Problem with doing this is when the key gets cold it doesn't work. Solution is to take like a TBKV that's TBK-5 and put the key inside it with some warm insulation. You could even cut the actual metal end off to be a lil more secure. Simply then supply power and ground to the bypass, and maybe run the Ground while running wire to a hidden switch for added security You would have to flip a toggle switch and then turn the ignition on. or just put it to ground and not worry about it. I wouldn't recommend doing this but if its what you want, that's the only "safe" way i can come up with. Otherwise you'd have to rip out all electronic controlled systems.

Just being nosy. Can we get a little background as to why you want to do this?

Ok, fine. Take apart the key and locate the small glass tube looking RF chip. Hot glue it to the top of the key cylinder. Done.

Not sure why you would want to do it anyways. Even if it were a trail rig. I hope someone does steal it...

JimmyJ,
Welcome to the forum. I'm over just north of Rome. Maybe someday we'll meet on a trail. As an aside to this, I bought two spare keys shortly after buying the JK and had Ace Hardware cut them. Then I programmed them according to the owner manual so I have a couple spares now. If you see a black two door with JK stickers and JK-Forum.com East Coast stickers on the side, that will be me. I think I'm the only member of the forum around here except for one member in Syracuse. Once again, welcome, you can find a ton of information on here about a JK.
