Trail rigs don't spend a lot of time in the Wal-Mart parking lot. They are usually either on the trail or locked in the garage (and towed from one location to another). Plus, it sucks losing one of those $60 dollar keys by dropping it in knee deep mud. Losing a $1 conventional key is much less painful.

Really, it's not that hard to figure out.

I have a trail only YJ. Cant even remember the last time I took the keys out of the ignition. Why would you take the ignition key out in a mud hole ?

The OP never said anything about a trail only rig.
Really not hard to figure out.

You leave your key in the ignition and you're on the OP's case about wanting to defeat the smart-key feature on his? Now that doesn't make any sense at all. At least he would still have a working keyed ignition. All someone would have to do is jump in and drive yours off. BTW, there are thousands of older cars out there that don't have smart-keys and only a small percentage ever actually get stolen. Plus, smart-keys are hardly a theft-proof device. Professional car thieves can defeat them easily. They really only provide a false sense of security.

I just got one of these for $15:

Take it to your dealer and they will cut and program it for free. Oh, and make sure you get the right one for your year. I think the 07 is Grey, while the 08 is brown.

Just cause the key's in the ignition, doesn't mean it can be started.

I saw them in one of my Jeep mags. I think your dealer is just cool. I'm pretty sure most other dealers will charge an arm and a leg to cut and program that for you.

Heck, my Jeepster Command had a starter button and a disabled ignition switch. Funny, nobody ever tried to steal it...
