Default LED taillight questions

So, what does it mean when they say that the round recessed led tail lights are not DOT approved? Is it because they do not have all the functions of a normal tail light? Will you get stopped for having these on your jeep? I really like the look and want to put some on along with some corner guards, but not if they're going to get me pulled over on the highway.

I think they are not DOT approved because they do not have built in reflectors. I bought some LiteDots for my TJ last year, and they came with reflective strips (like on the back of semi's) to make up for that. I put the reflective strips on my gas tank (it was about the level as normal car tail lights ) Never got pulled over for them.
Also, I think you have to have some kind of side marker light in the rear as well. If they are recessed, then you would have to add small red lights that were visible from the side. The LiteDots on my TJ were surface mounted, and had built in side marker LEDs to serve that purpose.
