why would you need a radiator fan bypass? is it for when going into deep water you can shut it off and the electric fan wont be harmed?

When you're fording deep water, the fan will suck water into the engine bay. It's better to turn off the fan. The fan in our JKs is a two speed fan, so there are 2 'hot' wires. It's also fused and wired for 40A. You have to get a special heavy duty relay rated for 40A+ that's Normally Closed (NC) and switch the ground wire.

The weather warmed up enough to work on the HU today. Here are a few pictures of the first test fit and final assembly waiting to go in later this week -- including a few shots of some alteration details. Woohoo! :-)

That may be one reason, but I think the main reason is that if the fan's running and you submerge the plastic blades, they'll distort and tear up your radiator. Engine-driven fans usually have a clutch and shouldn't have this problem.
