Default Monitor for factory DVD

First off I would like to say that I love this site.......I joined a couple months ago and enjoy reading all the threads here not to mention all the great ideas you guys have. After reading some of the threads on installing a monitor for the factory dvd player in our JK's, I was inspired and a bulb went off in my head. I finally got a few days off and although I've not completely finished, this is where I am as of now.......

First I relocated the compass to the dead spot between the air ducts. It fits perfectly under that little shelf area.

Then I took my Dremmel and cut some.....

Then I cut the lid and with some styrofoam and bondo, re molded it. I forgot to get and pictures before I painted it, sorry.........

This is what it looks like when open to view...

I still need to at least paint the inside. If anyone wants further pics just ask. It works great. It's still a work in progress.........All criticism is welcome. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and have a Happy New Year........

LOVE the idea! I also really like the creativity that all these users have and pushing others to think outside the box as well.

Think you can still see out of the front windshield with that? I like the fact that this is a "stealth" install, but would worry a bit about my line of sight while driving....

Default Stealth monitor

I love that installation! I had thought of that location for a CarPC a while back, but never acted on it - waiting until more funds are available - That looks awesome!
I've got a few questions:
Can you supply us with the parts list for your installation?
What do you like/dislike about it?
If you could do it over again, what would you change?
Lastly, how much did this cost?

Thanks again for a great stealthy install!

fyerman69 - I never intended to have it on when driving. I have a monitor for the rear that my daughter can watch. This one is just for the "honey I'll just be a minute" times with my wife.

Josephus - The biggest thing I like is the stealthyness of it. I just got it to the point it is Monday so I don't have any dislikes yet. Given the location it's in there's not a lot of room for change but the ideas are still churning right now. Parts cost was about $150.
Parts list - Monitor is MTV & Video, I picked it up at a local A/V shop, it listed for $149 but I talked them down to $100.
I bought a new dash piece to work with, $6.50 at the dealership.
Small can of Bondo was $5 and a piece of styrofoam from the local hobby shop $6.
I'm thinking about getting some kind of carbon fiber decal or something to just cover it with. I don't know yet.

Hey I was wondering how you are hooking up the video to you monitors. I have two monitors that I want to install the the front seat headrests for the back seat passengers. I also want to keep the stock deck. What should I do about video output. Wiring harness? and if so where can I get one.

Thanks;

so the wiring already had that plug or did you hack the wiring and get your own plug to the screen?

That loooks great. I was really considering trying this, but do not have the balls. I have one suggestion... why not hinge the top of the screen? That way when you open it, you swing the bottom out to rest just above the front of the head unit. This will also give you more window visibility and a lower profile for the screen. Don't forget to put some kind of pad or something on top of the radio to prevent screen scratches. Great install!!! Can we get some larger pictures? I want a closer look!

NICE. Finally, a step in the right direction toward the flip-up monitor that I suggested months ago.

Hmmmm...

Watching movies while driving...

I don't know about that, I know in Minnesota you can get a stiff fine for having the video viewable by the driver.
