Post Polk Audio DXi650s, DXi6500, and Dynamat installation.

So I changed up my audio components again. The sound was “ok” but not great. I lost all lower mid-range and the Kicker/Mopar Amp was still limiting full-range output to the sound bar.

Pervious:
- Sony XAV-72BT, Head Unit.
- Kicker/Mopar Amplifier 77KICK46
- Infinity Kappa 652.9i, 2 ohm, Sound bar (Link to Kappa Install)
- Infinity Kappa 653.9i, 2 ohm, Dash
- Kicker CVR82 8” Subwoofer, 1 ohm
- Rockford Fosgate PBR300X1 Amp for Subwoofer. (Link to Sub Install)
- I also filled all the enclosures with Poly-Fil.

So this weekend I decided to do it right. I put Dynamat inside of all the enclosures and removed the Poly-Fil from everywhere except the subwoofer enclosure. I also took this opportunity to bypass the stock amp set up completely and run the speakers off of the Sony H/U, which puts out 52x4 @ 4 ohm. Since the Sony is a 4 ohm system, I swapped out all of the Infinity Kappa’s for Polk Audio.

New Setup:
- Sony XAV-72BT, Head Unit.
- Polk Audio DXi 6500, 4 ohm, Dash & Tweeters.
- Polk Audio DXi 650S, 4 ohm, Soundbar.
- Kicker CVR82 8” Subwoofer, 1 ohm
- Rockford Fosgate PBR300X1 Amp for Subwoofer.
- Dynamat in all enclosures and Poly-Fil in the subwoofer enclosure.

I listened to this setup without the subwoofer hooked up first, just to check things out and with this setup, I got back all of the mid-range that was lost. A buddy of mine needed a place to store his JL Audio 500.1 Amp and 12” W7 sub for a few days, so I temporarily have it hooked up right now and not the Kicker 8” Sub. Also, if anyone was wondering, the 4 Ohm set up, gets just as loud as the 2 Ohm setup, so there was no loss in volume.

Soundbar and Dash Pods all full with Dynamat. I actually filled the center section of the soundbar with Poly-Fil and then used the Dynamat to block off the center of the soundbar.

I used some of the extra connectors i had lying around to make things easy for install and removal. This is the soundbar wiring. I soldiered all the connections and used heat shrink. Dont pay any attention to the blue and red heat shrinks, I put the blue on and then decided to use the red ones for a better fit.

Here are the Polk's installed in the pods.

The tweeters that came with the Polk DXi 6500's blend right in with the interior.

You must b a mind reader because I was looking at pretty much the same exact setup 30 minutes ago on Crutchfield website. You answered a lot of my questions I had about the speakers. Two question for you , did you have to do anything special to get the tweeters fit and where did you install the crossovers?

Looks like you used the adaptors that come with the Polks, any issues mounting to the pods or sound bar?

How do the tweeters fit into the tombstones?

Did you have to use the DXI650s in the soundbar due to depth issues or would the standard DXI650 work?

Thanks

Crutchfeild said you need the "S" but I don't really think that's true. With the 650S in the sound bar, there was about 3/8" clearance for tweeter to grill and depth wouldn't be an issue. I used Crutchfeild supplied adapters in the sound bar, which were Scouche (sp?). They fit but needed the longest tab had to be trimmed and the hole relocated. On the fronts, I reused the adaptor that came with the Infinity Kappas.

The tweeter was simple. There is a metal thingy that comes with the tweeters and it's meant to be used for the flush mount cup. I just bent the tabs on it, put it in backwards inside the tombstone. That way the tweeter cup screws into that thing and the pull tight together holding everything in place. This way there is no cutting on the tombstone and everything is reversible.

See above for tweeter info. As for the crossovers, I used super sticky compression tape, the thin foam type. I stuck the LH side to the speaker pod and the RH side to the dash area under the glove box.

Sorry for not be more descriptive. I'm using my cell. The power is out in my building and we're about to get hit by a Typhoon.

I also ordered the Polk Audio DXI6500's for the front and DXI650 standard for the rear. I hope they will fit, they have slightly more power and freq response than the shallow mount version for the same price; looks like the only issue is the tweeter depth with the stock grilles so washers should correct this or I will use the Polk grilles.
I will be powering these with an Alpine MRX-V70 5-channel amp and will replace the stock sub at some point.
I'm bypassing the stock Infinity amp and will run new wiring to the Alpine amp from RBZ head unit and new speaker wiring all around.

Post an update with pictures, because I'm interested in how it turns out for you.
