Default Remote Key Question

<p> Ok, I have ordered The main stuff for my Elec swap in my jeep. It should all be here by this comeing monday. Which brings me to my next question. </p> <p> Local yard has some remote key for jeeps and dodge cars. So not wanting to drop another $200 for 2 key. I was wondering if the keys could br programed to my jeep. </p> <p> I have heard and been told that these are one time use if you get a remote key. That the module incodes something on the key that wont let it be programed to another jeep if you replaced the blank.which does not seem right as if you replace the module for some reason, you couldnt reuse old key.</p>

Here are a couple of sections from a 2007 Manual:

Replacement Keys
NOTE: Only keys that have been programmed to the
vehicle electronics can be used to start the vehicle. Once
a Sentry Key has been programmed to a vehicle, it cannot
be programmed to any other vehicle.

Customer Key Programming
You can program new keys to the system if you have two
valid keys by doing the following:

So if a key has been programmed it can't be used on another vehicle and if you have two valid keys you can program additional ones. If you only have one, then you must go to the dealership and have them program them.

That is what I have read. But after talking with a dealer about the remote start module. They said the keys would be lost to the car when it is replaced and reprogramed. So, i would take that to mean the keys dont know the jeep at statied in manual.

the WCM gets its information from the PCM.. my guess is the keys are locked to a VIN but not a particular WCM..

when you install remote start, you replace the WCM unit with another that has the remote start antenna on it.. after the new WCM is installed and starscanned int oservice on the CAN... (the sales code entered for your jeep and the associated softweare downloaded and activated in the PCM).. you then take your original 2 keys and the 2 new keys that are shipped with the new WCM and program them all up.. so you end up with 4 keys at the end... 2 with remote start button, 2 without..

the keys are still coded to the same VIN and PCM serial number.. just a different WCM..

if you look how SKREEM (sentry key) works, the jeep starts and runs for 2 seconds.. this time period is so that it can catch a reading from the weak-signal transponder in the key sent to the WCM.. the WCM then sends that info to the PCM where it compares it against its digest.. from what I understand the keys only transmit their code once per second, thus why the jeep is allowed to run 2 seconds awaiting the key info...
