Upgades to Factory Sound system

Upgades to Factory Sound system
Has anyone added a subwoofer or replaced any of the factory speakers for a better sound from the factory radio yet? My X just has the six speaker system without the sub in the back. Any wiring or speaker tips? The separation from the factory system is great, but the system sounds very "tinny".

just upgraded the 4 front speakers and added a sub/amp in rear of my x. it too came with the standard audio system. got a great deal on 4 alpine 6 1/2's and a JBL 10"sub w/box and amp from soundadvice on black friday paid under 300 for everything and am very satisified with the results! the paper/plastic factory speakers where a joke!
install: rear sound bar was cake, 20min instal on the two 6 1/2 speakers
front speakers wow what a headache! they are the same 6 1/2 speakers as the soundbar now no 4x6s anymore. the entire dash practicaly has to come off including the instrument cluster. i would recomend having them installed by a shop took me 3hrs to install the front.
amp and sub wasn't all too bad, but you have to drill a hole in firewall to pass the power cable from the batt to amp. i did so on passanger side and added a grommet to seal.
i kept my factory radio so i just added a high/low converter on passenger rear speaker to get signal to amp. everything else was plug and drill to mount
not too bad overall but i would recommend a shop to do the front speakers and amp if your not too experianced.
but the sound is night and day improvement! really got rid of that crappy sound from the factory paper cone/plastic casing speakers! no more distorsion and vastly improved highs/mids plus the pre non-existing bass to balance the sound.
recap: front- two 6 1/2 speakers (alpine 2way)
rear- two 6 1/2 speakers (same alpine 2way)
sub- 1 JBL 1000w 10" (nice slim box)
amp- 1 JBL amp 2ch Bridged for sub
total cost: $289.00
improvment 200%
hope this helps all

thanks xravn that does answer some questions I had. I guess I will start with the 4 - 6 1/2" and some type of slim woofer myself. I was hoping most of the distorsion was the speakers and not the stereo. Did you add insulation to the sound bar, I looked in mine and its hollow. A good place for some fiberglass I would say. Thanks again!

When I could not get the MyGiG with my order I started looking for other double din alternatives... Not much knowledge in the stereo department, but I was told that you can not just replace the head unit in the jeep without completly rewiring all the speakers. true?

usally not true, you should be able to get a harness for the jk soon if not already. and if that is not the case or don't wanna wait or purchase one you can always cut the harness and use the factory speaker cables wires. although i would recommend using a harness, if you ever wanna revert to factory radio (trading in/ selling time) and is just a much easier and cleaner install. hacked up a few cars in my day and although you can do it good and neat and retain the factory harness for the future, and aftermarket radio harness is the way to go by far. usally only like 20 bucks anyway.
