I don't think you can tap in the vss that way. I believe you need the metra harness. That is what I used.

When I tapped in to the vss wire directly mine did the same as you listed above. The harness fixed everything.

Yes, you need a harness to access the vss wire as there is no vss wire, which is something the harness provides.

hi i am installing a pioneer z2 and it uses the vss wire to get the speed of the jeep to help with navigation. before i always just tap into the vss wire and it reads the speed . but mayb its not the easy with the jeep, i have everything else working perfect just would be great to use the vss wire without having to buy a 100 dollar adaptor. all that i need is a way to use the vss wire . thanks

so i guess the only way to get the vss signal is to buy the Metra XSVI-6522 harness and that will give me a vss wire from that ?

Not exactly. Metra isn't the only one that makes a breakout harness...but YES, you have to buy SOMETHING. It breaks out the VSS signal from the CANBUS. There isn't a "VSS" wire that can be directly tapped. Notice the metra part isn't just a harness, but has a little electrical box attached to it...
