Hi, first time posting here. I just bought a really nice, used 2016 JKU Sahara. This is my first Jeep and I absolutely love it. I've waited 25 years to buy a Jeep, and can't believe I've waited so long. I don't think I've smiled this much in a long time. It has everything I wanted, other than the upgraded stereo system. The stock system sounds pretty bad, so I plan to change it out. I also had cataract surgery a few years back at age 39, due to a concussion a few years back, and now I need a large screen to see clearly up close without glasses. So, a 7" screen is imperative for me, so I'm not switching between sunglasses and reading glasses while driving.
For those who have had Jeeps for a while, I assume the glare from an open top can affect the screen viewing during the day. There are two different types of screens: capacitive and resistive. Normally, I'd say capacitive would be best, as it's similar to an iPhone screen, but I wonder if the glass screen might produce more glare and not be seen at all with the top down on a sunny day. Kenwood is one of the only brands I'm finding that uses a resistive touch screen, which might have less glare, and may help on bumpy roads, as it requires pressure touches to click items on the screen. I'm not sure, so I figured I'd ask here. Any recommendations, or experience? I'm currently looking at these models, but I'm open to other suggesstions, too, if you have experience with a specific stereo. These were just suggested by local sound shops and I'm trying to decide who I'm going to let do it. I'm also replacing the stock speakers with either 6.5" Memphis or Rockford Fosgate's. No sub or exterior amp, because I don't want the added expense or reduced cargo space. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Congrats on the Jeep and welcome to the family! I am in the same boat as you right now, I was looking at the Alpine which I've seen in a lot of Jeeps. I already upgraded with Kicker Speakers and BTW they make an under the passenger seat amp/woofer. Made a world of difference without sacrificing space.

 

Thanks. I’m absolutely loving this thing. I didn’t get a response, so I went ahead and picked one. I had the Kenwood installed and it sounds great. The more I read, the more I worried that the glass capacitive touch screen would glare too much with the top down. And the Kenwood was a little cheaper, but still had the features I wanted. I’m happy with it. Also went with Rockford Fosgate Punch speakers to replace factory speakers. They sound really good, too.

I’m really happy with it. But, do you have a link to the under seat amp and sub? That could be a nice future upgrade.

my stock radio is defective and is way past warranty, I've been looking at the Alpine ILX-650W and am starting to think that is the route I am going to go. How do you like the Kenwood? any photos of it in dash?

I recently replaced my Insane Audio head unit (worst stereo ever) with a Kenwood DNR1007XR. The large display floating screen is wonderful. And as you mentioned glare, the screen can be tilted to eliminate any glare. It also has a lot of really nice features.
