True! But with the amount of snow we see in GA, I've never had a problem using just 4 hi lol.

Does the depth of snow make a difference in using 4 lo or hi? I would imagine it does, but I haven't been able to find out for myself!

i would think the consistancy of the snow would be the major factor. we were on several feet of snow, but spent most of our time on top. in light powder where you would sink might be different. i found 1st gear, 4low, to be to slow to get momentem going. 2nd or 3rd worked good with a rubi (not sure if it works in with 3:21s). most of the time i started in 2nd or 3rd even, and didn't bother with first. i've even started in 4th gear from a dead stop and it worked fine. if you try that in high range, you'll just stall it. i think go low, and use your tranny gears accordingly. I would think the same would apply for auto, but i'm not sure how many gears you can actually select.

Thanks for the tips! Sadly I have an auto, and I can only select 1st and 2nd gear.

Rather than moving 2 to 3mph, I come to a full stop, step on the brake, put my auto into neutral, shift into 4-lo AND HOLD IT THERE, with my free hand, shift into drive and release the brake pedal. Once I start rolling, my 4-low catches and I am fine...

I have NEVER had luck shifting into 4-low while moving at 2 or 3 mph. All I get is horrible grinding!
That's the problem I have , the grinding ! But I'll try this next time !

Sounds like a good plan... are you in 4HI already when you come to a full stop (before putting auto to N)?

I don't think it's a good idea to be shifting into 4 lo from 4 hi. I always stop, put into neutral and then shift to 4 lo. There's a reason there's grinding if you shift while moving. I wouldn't do it.

Default How to Correct 4Lo Shifting Problem

I used to have the same problem and tried all kinds of methods; none worked satisfactorily or consistently. The problem was cured unexpectedly as a bypdoduct of installing my Tuffy center console. When I picked the vehicle up, the shop owner commented - "while we had access to the shifter cable we adjusted and lubricated it well and it should work much better." All that was interesting since I had never mentioned the problem. The result of their work is that I now shift easily and consistently this way - shift into 4hi before I completely stop and after a complete stop shift easily into 4lo with no noise. To shift out of 4lo I simply stop and shift out to 4hi or 2wd.

I strongly suggest you adjust the shift linkage and enjoy using 4lo. You will be amazed at the difference. Hope this helps everyone.

I've always come to a full stop and put into neutral for every 4 wheel drive vehicle I've driven. My jeep does it flawlessly every time. I'm just glad I don't have to drive in reverse for 15 feet like I had to in my brothers 85 suburban. In fact, ive never even tried to do it while rolling. Hmmm
