4 Low in an Automatic
Not sure if this helps those having issues getting into 4-lo but I use this method which was shared to me by my brother in law that always had issues with his 2007 Sahara (I have a 2010 Rubicon and this method works for me all the time).
Rather than moving 2 to 3mph, I come to a full stop, step on the brake, put my auto into neutral, shift into 4-lo AND HOLD IT THERE, with my free hand, shift into drive and release the brake pedal. Once I start rolling, my 4-low catches and I am fine...
I have NEVER had luck shifting into 4-low while moving at 2 or 3 mph. All I get is
horrible grinding!

N, then move to 4L, then back to drive, it works fine. The owners manual says to be rolling slowly, but with my Rubi, all it does is grind...no matter how I try it. I have been doing it for years, so it isn't my technique.
I say whatever works. I guess it's just a Jeep thing, and every Jeep has its quirks
Coming to a complete stop works best for my 2007 rubicon as well.. all the owners manual way did was embarrass me in front of my friend with its grind
haha but stopping and moving it into 4L while in neutral has proven best for me also.

At a dead stop 90% of the time I cant pull in into 4lo..sometimes i cant get it back into anything.. If I try to do it while rolling it GRINDS!!! My first solution was to let it creep backwards and it popped in quietly everytime. I then realized that it wasnt going backwards that did it for me, it was the going very slow part. and when I say creep, crawl or rolling I mean its always in neutral! Trying to put it in 4lo with the transmission engaged makes the gears unable to mesh.
I have NEVER been able to just drop it into 4lo, but it works flawlessly if I am crawling along and pop it into Neutral first....
For me 4lo is pretty much the standard. (Mine is an auto) Leave it in drive as you mosey along the trail, if you are going up a steep climb (or decent), drop it into 1 or 2. If you leave it in drive, the tranny will still send you through the gears, which is great for ripping up a mud puddle, not good when you need torque to get up a slippery slope or down without burning up the brakes.

Kind of funny 4Lo story, my daughter and I hit a new trail this weekend, but my new friend who told me about it neglected to tell us about the 6 angry dogs who live in the big house at the start of the trail (LOL T), so there we are, doors and top off, as I'm trying to pop it into 4Lo. My daughter starts off calm and low saying "dad....dogs....Dad!...Dogs!...DAAAAD!!! DOOOGGGS!!!!!" Needless to say, I was able to find 4Lo rather quickly and off we bolted through the mud, and wouldn't you believe those damn dogs chased us another couple hundred feet into the woods. So when it comes to finding 4Lo, I think when you're in a real jam, you'll find it.
