What's an auto?

The one time I drove an auto, I nearly crashed looking for the clutch as I was braking!

Here goes again: How will clutching draw in muck into the tranny, and not clutching keep out muck? I can't see how that works.
Seeing as I have an automatic and not a manual, I can't give you the answer you're looking for... but if you use the search function and look for "mud* tranny" or something to that general effect, you can probably locate one of the threads that documents the issue.

In your case, I fully understand.
well through the bell housing and then in-between the flywheel and clutch-plate, I thought that was clear. I'm not sure how it would get "in" the tranny with the gears/oil/etc there is a front seal, maybe I'll learn something new here. Nothing ever got "in" my tranny just in the clutch itself.

My first Jeep was a YJ with a manual 5-speed. I did more off-roading in it than any other Jeep I've had, and the manual always worked fine for me.

My next Jeep was a TJ with a 3-speed auto. I always complained about it, and I swore I'd never buy another auto.

When the time came to order the JK, my plan was to order a manual. Well my husband prefers autos, so I decided I should consider one. I surprised myself and everyone that knows me when I ended up getting the auto. Since it's a 4-speed auto with overdrive, it's totally different than the old 3-speed auto, and I decided that most of what I didn't like the old auto wasn't the fact that it was an auto, but the fact that it was a 3-speed.

The only time I wish I had a manual now is when going downhill, because you can put it in exactly the gear you want. If the auto had D, 1,2 and 3, it would be perfect. Too bad it doesn't have 3 as a choice (although I saw a misprint in the manual that makes reference to 3!). Also, after reading abou the water-crossing issues with a manual, and the clutch issues, I'm glad I got the auto.

Yes, you were clear. I knew you meant in the clutch, also.
I think people were saying "in the tranny" when they really meant in the clutch. I can see how that would make the Jeep dead in the water.
Thanks.

actually you do have exactly what you are asking for you have D,1,2, OD is your 4th so in D with OD off you have the choice of 1,2,3, OD on is your 4th.

ok that is only sort of in english, but you have the 4 choices, just think of the OD button as the D slot.

I have been happy with the auto. No issues offroad... one less thing to think about on the hairy trails. Plus the wife doesn't mind driving the auto.

I'm new to the forum and researching about the Jk's. Lot so great info on here. This will be my first jeep, although I've wanted one for about 6-7 years nows. This has been a big toss up for me. I love the idea of 6spd manual, but honestly won't be using the JK as my dd. I have a cheap toyota for that task. So, the water and mud in the manual tranny does kinda scare me. I love to play around in the mud and water, along with some good ol' trail riddin. So, this really does concern me. Is this a relavent issue? Is there any fix for it? This could be a major decision in my purchase.

stick all the way. have to be in control when doing the dangerous stuff and never had a problem with the mud/water and i am not a pussy when off roading so i have seen some deep river crossing and mud pits.

but i guess its just the slowing down of the older gents on here lol ( you know the sport bike to harley conversion lol)
no i am just joking here. but still stand on manual for off roading and for on road i would still 6speed vs 4auto? just for the saving in petrol

just a preference and as long as there are no completes on the trails
