good post. I bought my winch with cable but im considering switching to synth.

One thing for sure, respooling the cable sucks ass. Takes me another 20 min when i get home.

Synth has to be better

ok soo the syn is way eaiser....and safer. but steel is stronger when being rubbed against somthing and steel isnt as unsafe as people make it.

so im going to start a new poll.

Depends on the type of rock too. With the sandstone and caliche rock types in the west and southwest the grains can work their way into the synth cable and cause chafing. Common sense can prevent that. Just like climbing ropes. Synthetic cables don't store the energy like steel cables do.

It depends of the angle. If the steel cable is rubbed against a rock with an angle of 75 deg. the steel cable can break, but not the syn. line.

Syn=Lighter for equivalent strength, safer if it breaks, easier to handle-respool, no slivers.

Rule of thumb is winch should be rated 1.5X the weight of the vehicle. My JK loaded up is about #5500. So I would need about an #8000 winch. I run a Ramsey #9500 with blue Amsteel.

That's 1.5x the GVWR btw, and that's considered a MINIMUM.

For rocks and hard packed trails, you often just need to overcome a lack of traction, and the actual force needed is not the hard part.

For sucking MUD, well, 1.5x GVWR is often too light.

A rig with its frame in muck is held down in the mud like a suction cup...its not just drag...its why the stuff will pull your boots right off.

My JK's GVWR is 5,400 lb, so an 8,000 lb winch is ALMOST 1.5x that.

So, I'd get at least a 9,500 lb winch as I prowl the Pine Barrens, etc...and MUD is not friendly to winches.

If YOU don't do mud, well, the capacity you need is less.
