going down hills??
i have hear a little of this but is say you going down a hill and you put it in 4low is it bad to put it in 2nd and just let it crawl down the hill, because i have heard that it puts to much pressure on ur trans of something, does anyone know that is true?????????
We've got a rubicon so to run it in 4Lo and 1st would crawl at such a low speed we only do it on extreme decents. I've got a tranny temp guage and have not noticed an increase in the temperature when going 4Lo and 2nd or Drive downhill. Not to say what you've heard isn't in some way true but for us I haven't seen any ill effects.
Put it in 4low and let it crawl down the hill in 1st. It won't stall and it shouldn't put that much stress on your tranny. At least I hope not because that's how I've done it time and time again.
Putting it in 4Lo 1st gear and just feathering the brakes is a very safe and controlled way of going down hills. It's a very common practise. Won't harm your transfer case. I always do it on steep descents
Engine braking is what the concept is called, and it doesn't hurt anything, it even recommends it in your owner's manual, etc.
Its better to do that, than to try to brake on a steep slope, and risk a slide, etc.

Here is what you are supposed to NOT do with a manual Rubicon. As you go down a hill in 4low, do not leave it in gear and disengage the clutch (push the pedal). If you gain too much speed and say leave it in first, it will cause the clutch disc to over-rev (driven by the wheels now) and pretty much grenade.

Dude - I wouldn't say grenade. I have an auto but I have spent more years than most alive behind a Jeep wheel. (My first drive was a CJ 3), my Grandad had an Army Air Corps mil Jeep in the 50's & 60's.
What IT WILL DO is make the driver loose control. Popping out that clutch is similar to hammering on the brakes, the tires skid, and you loose traction.
But you are right, leave it in 1st, if you decide it is a steep hill. DO NOT shift. Deciding half way down you want 2nd is a bad idea. Shoulda started down the hill in 4/Lo & second. If you picked first, well just go down the hill slower than you want half way down.
If you want to race down to the bottom, you're gonna wreck.
I have an automatic and usually leave it in second, and the transmission will shift itself MUCH safer than a human can.

LOL
Yeah...I use 1st, and figure its not a race...so I go slowly down...
..because SHIFTING will mean you put the CLUTCH pedal down, and you will SHOOT FORWARD w/o the engine braking slowing you down.
The newbies do it all the time, they go to shift, and the second the clutch pedal is depressed, they shoot forward like a gravity racer....
...and this can be tricky, because now they ARE going fast, and, if they drop it back into 1st, they might skid, etc...due to the sudden drag, etc.
...and second might not have ENOUGH drag now that they are flying down the hill...
...and most of them panic and slam on the brakes, adding insult to injury, and sometimes losing control altogether.
So - just like a water crossing, pick a gear, and ride it all the way though w/o shifting.
