Default Might be a crazy idea from a crazy noob but...

Has anyone ever thought or did something similar to a winch pull using reverse on their tires? I just had a random thought that if you where stuck using 3 straps on the rear wheels in 2wd might be enough to pull yourself out? 1 strap around each wheel and 1 strap to a pull point...

This might just be a crazy idea full of explosive danger... but had to ask...

This isn't crazy but you wouldnt want to do it on your tire older vehicles use to have a spot on the hubs for a strap to go into and it would winch itself out.

no i've heard of this. generaly a army trick. also if you are bottemed out, you can run a strap/chain the width of your jeep on either axle. when the chain/strap hits the ground it will lift the jeep and move it back like 1/2 of a tire. remove the chain and repeat, and repeat, and repeat.... well you get the idea

You have a good chance of breaking an axle that way. I was taught something like that while serving in the Army as a last resort thing to do. I tried it once on a ford F-550 and broke both rear axles. So i would use it as a last resort

I looked into the wheel winch thing, and they are like $400-$500, why would anyone get that when you can get a real electric winch for that kind of cash!

these were issued with our old ILTIS up here, but those things didn't weigh that much...I'd imagine weight would be a significant limiting factor

HMMWVs have a set up on their wheels for that purpose. I did it once with my old LR. It works, but is not the best idea, kind of a last resort thing. You need to go slow and careful or you will break an axle.
