From what I've read, the ground goes back to the battery, not the frame, body, etc.

Yeah 90 percent of eletrical issues come from improper grounds :(

The black wire does go from the solenoid back to the battery, but there is a ground wire that is much shorter that needs to be grounded to the frame.

look at the red arrows....
