When I change mine it is usually just a tad high but after I'm done I take it around the block, check it again and it's good to go. I love how easy it is to do an oil change on the Jeep, heck, this vehicle is all around easy to work on

Thanks for the write up, I got my first change free from the dealer, but next weekend I will be due for number two. I think I will make the switch to synthetic.

Also, thanks for the idea of ordering filters through the dealer, how much do they charge.

I think my girlfriends Liberty is getting close to needing a change as well. maybe we can have an oil change party.

This is why I don't pour in the full 6 quarts at first... I put in 5.5 quarts, start the engine and let it idle for 1 min. I then shut it down and let it sit for 10 minutes while I transfer the used oil to a container. I then add oil as needed to get the level to the top of the marker.

If my vehicle was overfilled, I would drain out a little oil: you should be OK leaving it though.

Also, after you change your own oil the first time, you should not need a filter wrench.

I also pre-fill my filter.

You need to account for the oil you use to pre-fill the filter. It's difficult since it's hard to keep some oil from spilling out when you go to put it on. However, you probably don't loose too much - just enough to make a second mess (1st is from when you took the old filter off).

Keeping it in the safe zone of the dip-stick is perfect. Check it after a couple of hundred miles (and about every 1000 as I do) and you'll figure out if you have enough. Checking it often is also a good way to early detect problems.

Yay, my oil light came on, close to the second oil change, the first one I am doing myself!

Went to one of my Autozone's today, they didn't have 5w 20 in Mobil 1 Synthetic, they did in regular Mobil 1 5000 oil.

They did have 5W 30. Didn't buy any today. Going to check a larger store to see if they have it.

Why did this get moved? Oil change 101 would seem to fit better in Stock than Off road?

I went to my local Wal Mart and got 5 qts of 5W20 Mobile Fully Synthetic for $22.00. Single quarts were $6.50 each so I just bought two 5 qt bottles and a filter. Filter was $3.29 or $5.69 for the better one.
This is by far the easiest vehicle to change the oil on.

Will need to check there. Oil filter wrench? Any suggestions on that?

I still have a few miles before I need to change it, but I'm itching to do it! Can't wait.
