Default Reverse Thrust

Anybody know if the manual transmission has thrust bearings set up for shock load in reverse? I know snatch/jerk strap pulling out a stuck jeep is always done best in forward gears but sometimes turning around in tight woods is a pain. And yes a winch is cheaper than a transmission but not always an option for everyone.

I would think stressing the backs of the ring and pinion gear teeth would be the limiting factor.

I agree with ronjenx, the diff is going to be the weak point in this equation. Though to answer your question, or to not really answer it, I don't have much information on the tranny. The dealership replaced mine, so I never had to tear into it and see what's going on in there. However, the off road words of wisdom I always learned is don't use reverse to recover unless you have to, because you risk damage to your diff. However, rule #1 was always it doesn't have to look pretty, it just has to work... once.

And you would be correct Rojenx and Red! A picture speaks a thousand words - this is what happens when you shock load a 30 in reverse:

Yes, I know that a 30 is an incredibly weak axle, but bottom line - the strength in your R&P are in the forward gears.

I was backing up on a rocky trail and blew one of the spider gears half way through the cover. I wasn't on the gas hard - I just got the front driver's side tire hung up and bang! Needless to say, it also destroyed the ring and pinion, and blew a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin.

Just my $.02, but drive until you find a place to turn around - it's much cheaper than having to replace your entire axle.

On that note,

I disintegrated a tranny trying to jerk someone out in reverse. (Pre JK, 700R4)

Not a good idea, I will always find a spot to turn around.
