Default Seat belts will save your life, even at 1mph:: SUV fatality, Boulder Canyon

From: h ttp://www.dailycamera.com/boulder-county-news/ci_15382722

I'm not trying to be disrespectful to the victim or his/her family, but as this serves ostensibly as the worst kind of safety reminder for seat belt use while off-roading (especially in vehicles with no doors or roof...) I thought it was important to post here:

A friend of mine who wheels a heavily modified newer Toyota FJ Cruiser is a HAM radio enthusiast, and followed this story from the beginning. He said EMS got there first, and immediately called off the incoming chopper rescue as a "code black" -- Then they radioed for blankets and "to prepare to provide comfort for citizens as well as emergency responders" indicating a gruesome scene. Apparently the victim was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover.

Man killed while off-roading in Left Hand Canyon

A man was killed in Left Hand Canyon on Saturday afternoon when he was thrown from his vehicle while off-roading, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's Sgt. Troy Wolf said the man was on a trail in the Fireman Hill area near the 37-mile-marker of Lefthand Canyon Drive with a group of people who were off-roading in their SUVs. His vehicle rolled several times as he went down a steep embankment around 3:45 p.m. He was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene.

Wolf said the man was the only person in his vehicle.

The Boulder County Coroner's Office has not released the name of the man pending notification of family members.

The story may be describing the "endo hill" obstacle on the fireman hill trail, part of the lefthand canyon complex of trails, detailed here: h ttp://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=203

Thanks for the link

Very sad thing

The risk of roll over is very high when off-roading, and this is a very good example about the seat belts

Prayer to the family

Good info. Unfortunately, it doesn't take anything close to a roll-over to eject a driver or occupant. Simply a strong jolt or jar can cause someone to eject from a vehicle if not belted in.

Indeed......When we were kids, a buddy of mine let his girlfriend drive his CJ5 down the road a couple blocks to grab a pack of smokes. She was a young, inexperienced driver to start out with. The jeep's stereo head was under the seat. She went to adjust the volume and hit a pothole in the jeep. She overcompensated the steering and rolled it a few times. Fortunately she was buckled in, but the hitch hicker she had just picked up wasn't. She was thrown out and crushed by the roll bar. They doubt the speed was much over 25 mph. It may not seem like a lot, but 25 mph in a roll over is fast enough.
