Default Standard transmission in mud.....

Anyone who drives a stick knows not to push the clutch in while you're in mud/water. With a JK Manual Tranny, can you pull off a clutchless shift in 4HI or even 4LO while mudding fast and hard?

My background - I grew up on a large farm, driving offroad all the time, some in auto some in manual, but never with a Jeep. I just put in an order for a 2012 standard tranny, and should have it shortly. I'm curious as to the capablilities, and so far no-one has been able to answer my question. I've been referred to this forum for educated answers.

Also, whats this business I hear about the Trak Loc LSD only lasting 50,000 miles?

Thanks guys!

Haven't done it myself, but I know I'd be hard pressed to pull off a clutchless shift in 4LO. The speed difference between the tires, motor and the transmission just make it hard to get a feel for when there's no load in the system to allow the shift, if ever. I have a Rubicon with the 4:1 reduction if that matters. Unlike the Miata I had for example, in which I could rip off a smooth clutchless shift with no problems.

I'd rather just pick a higher gear and go steady through the obstacle.

x2, I find 3rd gear is often a good gear, gets you lots of rpm and lots of torque in 4lo,

I have a 07 Jk manny. I can shift gears without using clutch. The clutch releases after 3k rpm. So if I start off in 1st, rev up to 3k and take it out of first and go into second. You kinda have to push it into the next gear until the gear opens and shifts in smoothly.

the transmission is vented so when you depress the clutch you open it to water and mud.

its surprisingly hard to do. here is a vid of me in the mud before i found this out

from fast forward to 7:47 to see the mud. you can tell i shift gears multiple times. luckily i was fine, but this is how the issue occurs

my videos basically shows what not to do when in wate/mud!

pick a gear and ride it all the way through to avoid problems. also if you stall you can start the vehicle without depressing the clutch in 4 lo.

If you shift the transfer case into 4-low then the motor can be started without depressing the clutch (as you have to in 4-Hi or 2WD). So if you get stuck you can then switch off the motor, change to reverse or whatever other gear you want without pressing the clutch pedal, and then turn the ignition key; the motor will start & you'll start moving.

Because the gearing is so low when the transfer case is in low range, the motor will easily turn over in gear & start without any serious lurching or strain on the drivetrain (as long as you are in a lower gear like reverse or 1st/2nd).

Thanks for the info guys. I liked the video too, by the way. Most of the mudding we do around here is driving fast on pretty flat ground, flinging mud everywhere, so yeah, 3rd gear in 4 low is what I use in a truck. You can't stall and restart without using the clutch in 4 hi in any vehicle, as far as I know. I'm ready to get my JK in though, as soon as I have a chance to field test it I'll let you guys know whats up. I didn't order my JK with Lockers, so generally I have to run through mud at a faster rate than a vehicle with lockers.

You kind of can... On the TJ there was just a module you unplugged right above the clutch pedal, instructions were even in the owners manual which means you could start it without a clutch in any range and gear without pushing in the clutch pedal. I got used to it so much that I did this mod on the JK.
