Stupid winch question ahead, you've been warned...
So, this is more an "I have no idea and am curious" kinda question. I've never had a winch personally, but I have one on the way now. I've noticed that in some pictures, the winch hook is just hanging directly out of the fairlead. However in most cases the hook is hooked onto a d-ring or something similar. What is the reasoning behind this? Is it bad to simply let it hang?
Just wondered.

So, could you put a rubber bushingish/boot type thing just north of the hook and snug it up to the fairlead to eliminate the rattle?
Anyway, its more a personal preference thing as opposed to this way is better than that way?
Thanks for the info guys, had always wondered about that.

Yeah, synthetic line. I just saw that one also. Realistically, I'll jerry rig a solution. I'm thinking a small rubber oring or something. We'll see.

I accidently got the line with the safety thimble on the end and ended up liking it. I wind it all the way in because I didn't want to hear the clanking and didn't want to have one of my d-rings walk off.

Simply turn your hook sideways the last inch or so of reeling the cable in and allow a tiny bit of pressure on the hook itself against the haus or roller fairlead. It won't move and it looks good too.

The rope should be kept with tension on it. If the wraps are not tight and properly wound damage could result to the rope when you use it.
Wither you keep tension on it at the fairlead or place the hook on a tow point is just up to how you like the look.
I used to hook it to the tow point but then noticed how the syn rope was getting weathered. Now I wind it all the way in to keep the rope more protected.
