I just installed a Smittybilt XRC10 on a '08 JKU. I've read its not smart to start the engine with the winch clutch already engaged, but if I leave the clutch out (Freeload), it sags and I'm afraid it could droop too far when I'm driving and it could catch on something..

1. While driving, do I leave the clutch engaged or will it be okay in Freeload?

2. Also, the safety instructions say to plug in the remote switch while the clutch is disengaged, but not to turn the clutch to the Engaged mode while the engine is running. But they also say to run the engine while winching so as not to drain the battery... So my question is: when do I start up the engine?

All that is crap have always left all my winches engaged all the time except when I want to freespool. Never any problems and never herd of anyone having any

 

Same here, never an issue in 25+ years of wheeling/winching.

I keep mine engaged with no problems.

 

The only risk I see to leaving it engaged is if you have a wireless remote and can actuate the winch by accident. That could do some damage. I leave mine in free or half way between the two. My winch is wired direct to the battery and will run off the remote with the Jeep off.... and I have a child.

Interesting. My Engo's instructions also tells to leave it disengaged unless I'll use it. When I leave it disengaged (free spool) I can pull the line very easily so this has been a concern.

So, it seems it's not a problem to leave it engaged.
