Winch purist questions?
In self recovery situations, I think that a winch is often THE go-to option. That being said, a come along can have it's place, even if it does only provide 1-2k pounds of pull.
If you find yourself in a situation where you need to pull yourself forwards & a little sideways at the same time, the come along can show it's worth easily. If you need to pull yourself backwards, & your winch is front mounted, well then, the advantage of the come along becomes obvious pretty quickly. If you need to pull a fallen tree off a trail, the come along can also have a place in that task. If you need to winch yourself 75' & you only have 50' of line on the winch, then you will need to stop & rerig at some point. The come along can be handy for holding you in place while you get a fresh bite on the winch line. And if you don't have any winch at all, or can't afford one, then the come along certainly beats having nothing at all.
I have one. It still gets used now & then. There have been a few times over the past several decades that it has provided a necessary advantage.
Trying to use a high lift in place of a come along is not something I want to do if it can be avoided. The difference in ease and efficiency is not small. High lift jacks have a number of legitimate uses. Replacing a come along is not a first choice for me.
