Default 200lbs tounge weight for 2dr jk?

ordered the rugged ridge trailer hitch the other day, got it yesterday. went to put it on at work this morning and realized the tounge weight is only 200lbs. i bought the hitch specifically for a cargo basket that goes into the hitch. it weighs 34lbs so that leave only about 166lbs of tounge weight left. is that enough? is 200lbs tounge weight average for the 2door???

No one? Another reason I ask if its the hitch or jeep is cuz the same hitch on the 4dr is 350lbs. So the hitch isn't weak, its the 2dr

It is 10% of the rated tow rate of the Jeep. The 2 door is 2000 lbs, the 4 door was 3500 lbs.

The 200 limit is for tongue weight for a trailer. The inertia of a trailer acts differently than static weight. The difference between the 2 and 4 doors is only the wheelbase. You can easily place 350lbs. or more on the hitch and mounting area. The handling will be no different than if you have a couple of large people in your backseat. That said a 150lbs of camper gear is a lot of stuff.

i called rugged ridge and they said its not for towing, if i was to hang 200lbs from the hitch (static) thats the max.

I agree with him matt, when you have the basket on its really not considered tongue weight becuase its not a trailer. like said above its no different then putting 300lbs behind your back seat. If the same hitch on a 4dr holds 350lbs then yours will hold 350bs.

It is different. 350 lbs. on a rear rack will lighten the front end more than the same weight behind the back seat.

You are absolutely right. Who was it that said; give me a lever long enough I’ll move the world? In theory if you moved the weight back far enough the jeep would do a wheelie.

It wouldn't be much different than adding a heavy aftermarket rear bumper/tire carrier, along with an oversized spare, trail rack, jerry cans, etc.
