Default Espedition with grandkids

I've made few mods to my Jeep (see signature below) as it's my DD and I'm retired, so have to keep it cheap. The underfloor storage mod with a Coleman SUV air mattress makes a great bed for me inside the Jeep. My brother, who has a Liberty with a lift kit, and I took our grandaughters camping for 2 days at Sublett Reservoir in SE Idaho last August. The kids slept in his old tent trailer and had a ball playing in the water. My grandkids range from 3 years old to 7 and his is an 8 year old. I'm still working on the shade made from an old pup tent. The trails getting there weren't too rough, so pulling the trailer with the small wheels wasn't a problem. See the pics below.

Oh, on a more serious note (though the preceding is the God's honest truth), I noticed my front DS is squirting out grease. :-( A new Tom Wood's DS is on order and I will replace next week. I guess that's just too many miles (over 110K) on those Rzeppa joints, and too much extreme articulation while disconnected.

Truer words were never written. Look at the Big Bend video I posted up. There's a Nisaan eXterra in it. Not trying to knock the xTerras, but there is plenty of fun to be had out there without being into rock crawling. Look at the Dakar and Camel Back Trophy rigs: They aren't anything at all like the typical rock crawler you see in the U.S., but most of those Land Rovers and Toyotas will kick U.S. Jeep rock crawler butt on the expedition trails they tackle--it's an entirely different mindset. Gas (correction: fuel) mileage is more important than monster tires because you probably won't find any huge rocks, but you might not find a petrol station before you run empty. Having said that, let me also say that the toughest trail I tackled was probably the one I documented in my Kinta 2 video. It was the first time I was glad to have lockers--or at least the rear, since that's the one I used several times. The hills were steep and covered by slippery talus. But, the Defender that was with us did not have lockers, and he (and she, his wife drove a lot) still made it--and on typically small overlanding tires. Speaking of which, that is the one thing I'd recommend changing if you have street tires on your Jeep: Go with a good AT tire. I love my Duratracs. Not the best in the mud, because they do clog up in the tread pretty quickly, but other than that they are awesome on street (where they are respectably quiet), dirt, sand, snow, ice, and even good on rock.
