Fail!!!!
using an impact gun here isnt the problem. the problem was using that impact gun on its highest setting, or hammering on the lugs to make sure they are tight. i work at a tire shop and i use an impact on everything. but then i hand torque the lugs. and if the wrench just clicks without moving, i back the nut off and start over. this was just WAY to tight!!! and using the lug nuts on the spacers is just fine so long as they dont hit the wheel.

The stud can stretch or, in the case of ribbed studs, spin them in the material.
Another example of tire shops and even regular repair shops hiring whoever they can get. I was an auto tech for 12yrs and have seen everything you can imagine. I cringe having anyone but me touching my vechiles. I have seen waaaaaaay too many idiots working in shops that I wouldn't trust to change the spark plug in my lawnmower. Just my 

They forgot to tighten the oil pan plug.
By the time she got back to work, enough oil was lost to cause BIG engine problems.
WalMart denied responsibility.
I don't know whether they ended up paying for a new engine or not.
Unless it requires special tools or equipment (or is covered under warranty), I don't trust other hands either.
