Default Homemade Winch ?

Hello,

I was thinking the other day.....

I have some machinist students who are now fabricating gears, and in another class we are doing some basic physics.

Thought it would be a neat project to build a winch !!

I have access to a full machine shop, CNC shop, steel fabrication shop, and an electronics department.

any thoughts? I can't seem to find much on the net, or here in this forum.

thanks in advance

If you are capable of pulling something like this off, thats incredible. If you built something that worked well, I for one would be truly impressed! I say if its something you want to do and your fairly confident in your ability to do this, GO FOR IT!

Very cool idea. You should try to find an old broken winch and take it apart to see how it all works and is assembled. (Reverse engineering) then see how you can make it better. i would love to see how it looks and works. Good Luck.

A lot of engineering, R&D and professional safety testing goes into winch designs. Not saying that you shouldn't do it but keep in mind the liability if things go wrong and someone gets hurt.

Make this a class project and everyone will learn something.

if he uses synthetic line and a strongcasing i dont think all that much danger would be involved. i say go for it if it is something you want to do.

good call, i checked out the warn 8274 is looks to be relatively simple, compared to planetary gears that is !! I'm thinking this will be a long term project.

thanks for the info.
