i have it on my 07 rubi. as far as i understand it its for engine fires. i would leave it there as there have been engine fires reported and the more help you have in putting them out the better.

 

My 07 X has it.

 

It also helps engine stay warm and a little with gas mileage since better insulation. Also, helps prevent wear from engine heat on hood paint. Only comes on rubi or Sahara. I actually added it to my sport, was $75 from dealer w discount. I added it in winter and noticed a decent difference in heater and time for warm up.

I took mine off and the hood nipples got hard.

 

Not on the my 2008 Sahara but my new 2012 does have it. It is sound deadening material. Trying to make the JK more civilized for the general public to get more sales. Same with all the interior upgrades. Like automatic A/C with thermostat control and leather interior.

 

I guess your JK is just special because mine never had it either.

 

as stated its for paint protection from engine heat, sound deading, and for engine fires. the plastic push pins melt and it smothers the fire.
