Question $13K quote on front diff replacement

Never posted here but I am hoping to gain some insight. I purchased my JK in July of last year and have only put 3k miles onto it (currently in the military and opportunities to travel and explore are limited). On Thursday night I was driving and I heard the bone chilling noise of my front differential going bad while traveling 65mph. Immediately pulled over and waited for a tow truck. The shop diagnosed it as a complete failure of front diff and told me it would cost me upwards of $13K to replace. Mechanic told me it looked like someone serviced it but never refilled it and because of that, the warranty will not cover the cost.

Has anyone here ever had to completely replace a front diff? If so, how much did it cost? I am trying to find out if this guy is trying to prey on a military member and is full of shit or if this is in the ballpark of what I should expect to pay. Any and all advice/insight would be welcomed.

It might be possible to pull out the front axles and broken differential, and run it in 2wd until you find an honest mechanic...

That could be a good estimate, here is what I found available for 18 JKs: Gear ratios, and vehicle sales codes like the DME or DMF are the difference.
68360803AB AXLE, Service Front Chrysler Usage: JEEP - 4WD [J]; SPORT UTILITY 2-DR TYPE #2 [72], SPORT UTILITY 4-DR TYPE #4 [74]; X86+DJC+DME+DSE * [DME], [DSE] List Price:$5,670.00

Have you viewed the internals of your axle? It is very strange that someone servicing would not remember to put lube back in after draining the diff.

The replacement cost seems in line. What about rebuilding cost? keeping your axle assembly and rebuilding the internals, I would guesstimate your cost would be half the replacement cost. And you will know what is in there this time. Unless you are stepping up to a currie or fusion axle or the like, rebuilding the existing axle would be best dollar value, even upgrading the internals won't get you close to $13,000.

Jeesh, can buy a different axle and pop it under there for a fraction of that price. We talking a D30 here or a Rubi D44 front end? If a D30, can't cost that much for an axle even if you had to pay to regear it to match your rear end. We don't have a lot of details to work with regarding your situation, but $13k to have that jeep rolling again is a joke.

That price is absolute rubbish....you can get a salvage complete front axle assembly in your choice of D30 or D44/Rubi for less than $4,000 all day long and it will literally bolt right in....you could get a prorock44 complete for about 6500 and it would also bolt right in...shop around!!

$13k is insane. Do not pay that. Also try to find out what this "complete failure of front diff" actually is. What parts broke?

These are the pictures I was able to take when I visited the shop yesterday. I'm not quite sure how to tag people/reply to the comments with images so I hope this helps in showing what exactly I'm dealing with. That's a pile of metal shavings, not dirt or anything.

So you have a D44, probably 4.10 gears (3.73 were possible depending on year/transmission)...I'm not one who can look at that and really tell anything about the internals as I'm sure some of the more experience members can, but I would agree that to me that pile of shavings does look like its run dry.

That said I would still RUN from any shop that told me it was going to cost $13k to fix/replace...if it were me personally, I would look to find a matching rubicon front axle assembly (https://www.autopartsearch.com/ you can find the exact model with matching gears) tow/limp it home, and bolt in the salvage axle in my garage...If you're not up for that then find a local shop who will quote you labor only to R&R a complete front axle assembly, order and have the salvage axle shipped there, drive or tow the jeep to them, and pay them to install it.

This would also be a good time to think about a lift if you have wanted one and don't currently have one since you'll be reinstalling the entire front suspension anyway.

+1 on everything MD_ says above there. The rubi 44 increases cost of repair a bit, but we're still not even sniffing $13k. You're pretty much looking at a full regear and locker replacement at a reputable offroad shop, OR a simple axle swap if you can find one with matching gearset (have to determine the gears ya got there).

Quick search on https://www.car-part.com shows a couple not far from you with 4.10 gearing as an example. You obviously have to know what gearing you have first. Lot of Rubicons started coming with 3.73 from factory. Yours may have been regeared as well so figuring out gearing is step 1 -

Just throwing options out there to think about.
