I got my recall notice yesterday. Is Jeep going to recall all Wranglers back to 2007?

Is anybody asking the dealer to let them keep the old skid plate?

The dealer told me that the OE plate has to go back, makes sense, otherwise the dealer doesn't get paid for the recall...

Excerpt from the Yahoo news story posted elsewhere on this forum

"The NHTSA also checked Wranglers from the 2007 through 2012 model years and determined that only the 2010 models had the debris problem. Mayne said the 2010 Wranglers had a transmission plate and catalytic converter that were configured differently than the Wranglers from the other model years."

I just looked at this recall similar to lots of ATV spark arrester recalls do to people not cleaning mud and debree out and away from the area.
I don't mud my jeep mostly trail ride or rock crawl so I rather clean out or inspect my skid plate then to remove it..
It wouldn't be any different than when a person puts a full skid on. A routine removal for cleaning and inspection is recommended.

Well, I went in to the dealer today, and looked at this skid bar. I wouldn't have it! I called Chrysler, and opted out of the Recall, and verified with the NTSB that I can do so. Also had the dealer add a note to my customer file not to install this recall. It's just a slightly rec-tangled shape bar spanning from the left to the right bolt holes, with a flat metal tail reaching to the center bolt mount for stability. What I saw supports what everyone has suggested that the OE plate offers much more protection, and coverage. I would say that knowing there is a risk of fire due to build up of dry brush under the converter, than I take full responsibility to check and clean as needed.

I got a notice on this one yesterday too. I was hoping this "fire thing" would get Chrysler to
upgrade the transmission cooler and lines but NOOoooooo...... They apparently want to reduce the little bit of tranny protection I have to almost nothing.
I thought I'd check the board and see what folks are commenting on this item before I run to the dealership to have a skidplateectomy for no apparent reason.

I'm gonna hold off on this one. I usually only do wheelin on dirt/ rocks and such and haven't seen any "debris build up" other than a chunk of rock here and there.

sheesh ....

I wish I would have checked this thread before I took mine in today.

I can see why you guys are calling it a rock grabber.

Well, I suppose you could have a plate welded to the new bar, directly under the tranny pan, then to what ever is just in front of the pan frame/support wise...
