Default Is it a bad idea to get a 2012 JKU Rubi Automatic with the 3.73 gears

Hi All,

Finalizing my details for an order and wondering the following. I am only looking at 2012's

I'm pretty much decided on the 2012 JKU Rubi over the Sahara with the Automatic transmission. Never owned an Automatic vehicle before but this way the wife can drive it should her car be out of commission.

As we all know, standard on the Rubi is the 4.10 Gears but I am considering getting the 3.73 gears. Is that a bad idea? I currently do not off road but wouldn't mind starting some very light off roading in the future. I will never mod it or do any heavy off roading. I don't own anything to tow/pull. I do own classic cars but have never towed any of them, I drive them...so not sure if I'll ever start pulling them. this will be my primary vehicle for work and recreational use. I spend a lot of time on the road. Mixed between city and highway usage the South Florida region.

So which gearing would be best for me? Would the 3.73 in the Rubi just be a bad idea? Would getting a 3.73 hurt resale in anyway being a Rubi with 3.73? I know, I didn't even get it yet and I'm asking about re-sale value, but i gotta be practical and think ahead. What if the diesel engine comes out in 2 years...

Anyone out there have a Rubi with the 3.73? How's the gas mileage on the highway compared to the 4.10.

There happens to be a 2012 on a lot with all the options I would order but with the 4.10 gears. So far whats holding me back is 3.73 or I'd be there making an offer...

Thanks in advance for the opinions.

Max

sounds like you'll be good with 3.73.. I got the 4.10 though and will definitely help on the resale value.

I'm still trying to gather info on the 3.73 as well but this is my current guess:

4.10: 17-19mpg
3.73: 19-21mpg
3.21: 21-23mpg

Actually been thinking about this as well. I would be looking at a 2012 JKU Rubicon Auto. Going to be my DD with a lot of on road and highway. Not really interested in rock crawling or anything like that, looking more at overlanding. Would definitely get some off-road time.

Save the extra $$ and just get an X if you're not interested in rock crawling and such. For overlanding a stock vehicle would do fine and with the extra $$ you save you can put into mods that you'll actually use.

Maybe I am wrong, but I thought the Rubi came with 4.10. Maybe you could special order the others.

I agree , if only light off roading and pretty much no towing is involved , Rubicon would n`t have much to offer versus X.

If I could do it over again, I'd have gotten the 3.73's on mine instead of the 4.10's. The new Pentastar makes so much more power that it makes the 4.10's really over-kill for DD. Plus, with the better geared transfer case of the Rubicon's I don't see where the 4.10's are needed anyway. I drove a 2003 Sport (modified) for years over all kinds of off-roading and didn't have 4.10 gears or the better transfer case. I think my old one was 2.7:1 (?) on the transfer case gearing.

For the OP, the lower your gears, the better your gas mileage (in ideal terrain). I've gotten 22mpg on the highways when it's flat with no wind (and it was only going down at the time). Rubi's that I was convoying with (both stock and with 35s) were getting ~16mpg. I've gotten up to 34mpg in very short stints in town (doing 50 kph in 5th gear, RPMs at 1000/1100. However I either hit a light or ran out of flat road where I wouldn't have to stop...

I have a 6spd and 3.21 gears with 33s.

So you'll be regearing your 3.21 to 4.10?? What are the quotes you are getting to have it regear? Thanks.

I am in the middle of this exact situation. I have 2 Rubicons waiting on me to buy. 1 has 3.73s, the other 4.10s....

I do plan to put 35s on. I currently have a 4 JK Sport with 3.73s and the 4 speed auto. I get by, it is not horrible but could be better.

Help............
