I had 33s on mine for awhile. Only rubbed while wheeling. I ended up chopping the fenders tho

Before my lift I was running 33x12.5x16s on my Rubicon and didn't have a problem, didn't run it very long but didn't notice any rubbing.

I just put 285/70/17 (33" +/-) duratracs on my 2009 rubicon 4 door and the tires rub the sway bar at full lock. The quick fix is to put some washers on the turn lock bolts. It doesn't change the turning radius that much and it solved the rubbing issue without having to use spacers

My rims have 3.75" backspacing and I get absolutely no rub turning. If I were to disconnect the front sway bar and go off road, it would probably remove my fenders fast... I am adding the AEV 2" BB kit soon from Northridge.

That's true if you have the proper back spacing you should have no issues. If you have the stock tires you might have some rubbing

I am running 285/65/r18s Nitto Trail Grapplers on my stock 2011 JK. They rub slightly at full lock at parking lot speed but are fine on the load.

I have 33s and rubbed only when wheeling... all I had to do was put on a Teraflex leveling kit and I've never rubbed again. I didn't use spacers either. If you aren't interested in lifting your Jeep, but want 33s, go that route.

You can see here the front clearance with 33s and stock suspension...

And here, you can see a year later with the small leveling kit from Teraflex and the same tires... just enough room and doesn't rub when wheeling.

You didn't need spacers because your wheels have a different backspacing than stock.
Let's make sure we are comparing apples to apples.
