i honestly couldn’t tell you, as it’s been more than 5 years since I installed it. I know I got it from Oreily’s though, and I don’t cheap out on parts. It’s so cheap anyways, there wasn’t any reason to go cheap on it. I just looked, and they only have 2 online and they are both $10.99.

Thanks! I know mine were OEM, so I'll give the O'Reilly a try. FIngers are crossed!

Changes in pcv have never affected consumption for me.

If the catch can accumulates anything, then it was needed. It arrived Friday and I’ll be installing it Tuesday.

Sounds like you may have one of the 3.8’s that supposedly had the rings installed backwards. You never said how many miles you have on your 3.8. That kind of consumption doesn’t just start happening for no reason. If you’re experiencing the kind of oil consumption you described because of bad rings, then you’re going to have to dump the catch can regularly. Just be aware, once that oil collects in the catch can, it’s not going to be good enough to pour right back into the engine. It’s going to be saturated with fuel after having gone through the combustion chamber.

Yeah I know. 137k. Original owner. It uses about a qt every 1k miles. Runs fine otherwise.

I installed it today. Took about 20 minutes. Changed the pcv while I was at iit. The inside of the pcv hose and the valve had a very thin, but noticeable, film of oil. Valve seemed okay but replaced it anyway.

I’ve put 200 miles on it since the installation, and I’m not sure if it’s all in my head but it feels more responsive and quieter. I think I hear less of that occasional rattling sound under load, like nuts in a can. Slight increase in mpg from the high 17’s to high 18’s. Could be all in my head though. Time will tell.

Interesting, oil does lower the resistance to detonation. When you check the contents there might be a lot of water condensation mixed in with oil. You could heat it up and evaporate the water to get a true indication of oil captured.

Well, it definitely works and was definitely needed. Wish I knew about this mod 10 years ago. Better late than never. Here is what it’s collected after 400 miles. The filter is saturated too. What you see is what’s dripped from the saturated filter.

Edit: image won’t load. There’s about two teaspoons of oil in the can.

I ran across this item on Amazon. I'm highly considering picking one up where I think I could use it as the main cog of a DIY oil catch can or as a Heater Core Filter. For the Oil catch can, I don't see a reason I couldn't just screw an old oil filter on to it, I may mod the oil filter to open it up some. For the coolant filter I could pick up one of the Wix coolant filters. Screw in a couple 5/8in hose connectors and find a place to mount it.
