The Clean or Dirty thread
I wash mine about twice a year. The tool analogy is a bit far fetched if you ask me. I change my oil every 3k miles, diff fluid every 15k, regularly check belts, hoses, grease neccessary suspension parts, and even put some antiirust on the door hinges, and I spray down the wheels abd undercarriage to get any gunk out of the brakes and joints, especially after beach trips. Maintanence is neccessary to keep your tool working properly, cleaning it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. I don't think how much mud is still stuck to my carpets or how much of my paint you can see will negatively impact my performance.
A good rainstorm washes off most the mud after a day or two, and like I said I wash out the undercarriage.
Besides when it comes to the paint, I think all the scratches from tree branches will cause rust a lot faster then not washing mud off. A decent waxing once or twice a year protects it just fine.

I keep it clean but it's not uncommon to leave it dirty for a few days after a trail run. We had a CJ5 on our ranch that I don't think we ever washed - oh we might've scrubbed it with a broom to take to town on a Friday night.
I keep my uder-carrage fairly clean. mainly because i'm always uder it tinkering or inspecting it. the body i try to wipe down every month or so. and the inside i'll detail every couple of months. but, i'm kinda of anal about things.
After runs the dirt stays on for a couple days but 2 things make me clean it.
1. The mud at Rausch Creek stinks bad.
2. My 7yr old son drags himself into the back seat over the door jam. if it's covered in mud my wife says the worst 4 words you can hear "LET"S TAKE THE VAN"
