Default Clutchless Shifting

Im sure there are plenty of different names for it, but i shifted through my neighborhood today without using the clutch, just rev-matched and it fell into gear. Is i bad for the syncros? i would not do it every shift, but its fun once and a while

Yeah there is nothing wrong with it, I am missing my left leg and drove my old toyota like that for years... So I would only use the clutch to stop and start and when sometimes I just couldnt rev match into gear once and a while

Had to do that with my old VW bug back in the 70's when the cable broke.
It's a little different when you can't clutch at all.

If you don't hear any grinding, there is no harm done.

I do it in stop and go traffic all the time on my commute. I only use the clutch when coming to a complete stop.

'85 Celica (4-banger, RWD) drove it for 3-4 months with a dead clutch. Starting in first, rev-match shifting... creeping through stop signs in 1st gear idling. That tranny was bullet-proof... the engine on the other hand...

When your in any gear your engine crank shaft and your transmission are turning at the same speed. Once you take the vehicle out of gear the engine and transmission are free to turn at different speeds. When the speeds of the two match the transmission will slide into gear without haveing to use the clutch. By playing with the engine revs you can make it match the transmission speed and shift without using the clutch. Besides reducing a sore leg in heavy traffic this is a good skill off road allowing you to shift while fording without causing damage to your clutch (a wet clutch will desintigrate).

It is actually much more complicated than above, but that should cover it in a nut shell.

Watch your RPM when you shift gears normally. When you see that number is about the same on each shift , you have found the sweet spot. Mine is about 2. Try going from 3rd to without using the clutch. Find your S/S and pop it into 4th gear without the clutch. I'd recommend doing it where no one will rear end you if it doesn't work as planned.
