Default Diff Fluid & Cover Question

Under my JK this afternoon I noted a weeping condition on my front diff cover. Not a leak, just looks a bit damp.

I'm getting together all the tools supplies to do this myself.

I've read the write up on Project JK (excellent info), and have been searching this site for additional info.

Two questions:

Which is better to use RTV or a gasket, and why? (It looks like mine came stock with RTV) Pros cons on either?

I have the LSD in the rear. I can't seem to find what if any 'traction additive' I need if I go to the dealer to order my gear lube. Pretty sure it's required.

Thanks in advance.

Look at the bottle. If it has the additive in it, the label will point that out.
Otherwise, you have to get it separately.
Lots of the synthetic gear oils already have the "additive" in it.

I use RTV, better sealing quality. Oil will not penetrate RTV like it will a paper gasket. And RTV is cheaper. I use Fords additive in a lot of the rears I build , get it at a ford dealer. And just use a quality gear oil with it.

I've never used a gasket and the only pain with rtv is getting it all off before putting a new one on.

My only tip is to jack the front up and use jack stands on the frame to let the front axle drop down. Otherwise it's kind of annoying to get the cover back on(possible but irritating).

Thanks everyone for your information, it helps. I'm looking into the Lube Locker, not sure if stores up here sell it....if my issue get's worse quicker then I'd like, I'm going the RTV way. Searched the manufacture web sites, pretty cool how much info on their products is avaiable to read up on.

Unless you plan on removing your covers every time you change your gear oil RTV is the better way to go.

Look for LS on the bottle....Valvoline conventional and Mobil 1 synthetic come with the friction modifier already in it. I have used both.
